Waste Pickers without Frontiers: First International and Third Latin American Conference of Waste-Pickers Bogota, Colombia 1-4 March 2008
The Conference was a joint effort of waste picker and support organizations from different countries. It brought together two planned events: the Third Latin American Conference of Waste Pickers, organized by the Latin American Network of Waste Pickers and supported by the AVINA Foundation, and the First World Conference of Waste Pickers, initiated by Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO). A professora Jutta Gutberlet, da Universidade de Victoria, no Canadá, percorreu vários países do mundo para concluir que o modelo de coleta e reciclagem de lixo em Diadema é o mais avançado que conheceu em suas andanças. Mesmo no Brasil, a professora conheceu outras experiências de tratamento do lixo, que considera aquém dos programas aplicados na cidade do ABCD. Jutta conclui que o modelo diademense se destaca porque os catadores são remunerados, em um sistema que considera justo e inclusivo.

CBRL Participants at CuExpo
Thanks to the Office of Community-based Research at UVic and the funding provided by IDRC we were able to bring one recycler from Brazil to participate in the Community-University Exposition of 2008 (CUExpo 2008). Luzia Honorato was selected by the recyclers who participate in the PSWM project in Brazil. The Community-based research Laboratory organized two sessions during this conference.

The 1st International Recyclers Conference in Bogota, Columbia
In early March 2008 the 3rd Latin American and the 1st World Conference of recyclers was hosted by the National Association of Recyclers of Colombia (ANR) in Bogotá. CBRL director Dr Jutta Gutberlet and PSWM project committee member Fabio Luiz Cardozo were on-hand to represent the work of the Brazilian-Canadian partnership.

UVic – PRIA Partnership and UVic’s team visit to Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, India
Last year, the University of Victoria (UVic) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for higher education for social and human development with the Society for Participatory Research in Asia (PRIA), New Delhi, India. The CBRL, with its extensive research experience on recycling and waste management in both Brazil and Canada, was eager to extend its support to PRIA. Dr Nanda Kumar, a member of the CBRL, was assigned to be part of the Canadian team visiting PRIA in Delhi. He traveled with Rosaline Canessa (Geography department) and Maeve Lydon (Office of the Community-based Research) in PRIA’s project areas, conducting interviews with local governing body members and communities to get a first hand experience of PRIA’s initiatives and also to understand the issues and limitations.
